Religion
[VEROLI]

Inside the Basilica of Santa Maria Salome in Veroli there is the “Scala Santa” (holy staircase), which guarantees indulgence to the pilgrims who climb the stairs on their knees. .

Religion
[TRISULTI]

Just after the first millennium San Domenico of Foligno founded an important monastery in Sora and the first nucleus of the future “Certosa” (Charterhouse) in Trisulti (Collepardo).

It is time for the Jubilee, it is time for faith, and the area of the Ciociaria is full of faith. The various Sanctuaries that are scattered throughout the province of Frosinone would be a sufficient proof. The most famous shrine is that of the Madonna del Canneto, in Val di Comino. However, every religious place is intimately linked to the history of the surrounding towns and at times with that of more vast areas.

Of course it is possible to plan an itinerary which links the places of the Ciociaria to those of Christian influence. At Anagni for example four Popes were born, namely Innocent III, Gregory IX, Alexander IV and Boniface VIII. In the 12-13th centuries it was privileged papal residency, so much so that it is called “città dei Papi” (the city of Popes), and many important historical events took place there (the slap of Anagni).

Also the nearby towns of Ferentino and Fumone had great importance in the “Church” events. Extremely famous are the 3 abbeys of the Ciociaria: Montecassino, founded by St. Benedetto, and looked after the Christian and Latin culture during the dark centuries of the Middle Ages and it helped a rebirth in the following centuries. The second is the Abbey of Casamari, near Veroli, a Cistercian-Gothic masterpiece and the Abbey of Trisulti (or the Charterhouse of Trisulti), near Collepardo.

There is also the land of St. Thomas. Memories and historical testimonies of the great theologist and philosopher are present in Roccasecca, where St. Thomas was born around 1225, in Aquino which was his ancestral home, in Monte San Giovanni Campano in the castle where he was secluded in order to dissuade him from being a monk. In the same abbey of Montecassino St. Thomas studied and was trained before moving to Paris where he taught for a long time.
